1. The principal fields of activity of the chair are the following:
1) teaching basic and advanced courses in probability theory and mathematical
statistics and conducting classroom seminars;
2) preparation of highly qualified specialists in probability theory
and mathematical statistic by offering programs that lead to Bachelor's
and Master's degrees, as well as programs for graduate studies;
3) research in wide areas of probability theory and mathematical statistics.
The work of the chair is closely linked with the activity of the Laboratory of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics at the Institute of Mathematics, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Almost all faculty members are also on the laboratory staff. So one may speak of a united team of research scientists and faculty members representing a scientific school that has won worldwide recognition. This school has been established by Professor A.A.Borovkov , member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Academician), who has been providing leadership since the very foundation. Professor Borovkov is an outstanding scientist who has gained a worldwide reputation for his fundamental contributions to numerous areas in probability and statistics such as limit theorems for stochastic processes, boundary problems, asymptotically optimal procedures in mathematical statistics and queuing theory. He is also the author of several monographs and textbooks on probability theory and mathematical statistics.
Two seminars are functioning: one is devoted to research and the other to reviewing. Their members are graduate students, and scientists. Moreover, colleagues from other universities and scientific centers come regularly to the research seminars to report their own work. Side by side with publications in scientific journals, the seminar participants issued several volumes of the "Proceeding of the Institute of Mathematics" devoted to Probability theory and Statistic. The faculty members take part in many international scientific meetings and are invited to lecture at foreign universities.
